‘Will doing both a client and international secondment impact my chances of being kept on as an NQ?’

Future Metropolis trainee wants recommendation

Within the newest instalment in our Profession Conundrums collection, one soon-to-be Metropolis trainee has considerations that doing both a client and international secondment can have a detrimental impact on their chances of being retained upon qualification.

“I am soon to start my TC at a large City firm that offers both international and client secondments. I’d ideally prefer to expertise both, if given the prospect, however that will successfully imply solely 12 out of 24 months of my TC had been really spent working within the agency’s workplace in London. I might of course be gaining worthwhile expertise both means, however I’m a bit nervous that maybe by doing this I wouldn’t be as ‘visible’ to the companions and associates who will in the end be my most important colleagues sooner or later.

“Do you suppose doing both a client and international secondment might create any qualms re. my dedication to the agency / its London workplace within the companions’ eyes, particularly in the case of NQ retention choices?

“I’d appreciate advice from anyone who has completed both during their TC, and how their supervisors / grad rec partners reacted, etc.”
