Formal warning for judge who conducted hearing from his car

Justice on the go šŸš—

A judge has been given a proper warning for conducting a hearing from his car.

The Judicial Conduct Investigations Workplace (JCIO) stated deputy district judge Christopher McMurtie dealt with the hearing, ā€œpartly while driving and using his phone in hands-free modeā€.

The judge discovered himself within the considerably uncommon place after having to journey unexpectedly for private causes. He accepted the transfer was ā€œmisguidedā€ and gave assurances as to his future conduct.

No additional particulars had been offered.

In a statement published this week the JCIO stated: ā€œThe Lord Chief Justice, with the Lord Chancellorā€™s agreement, has issued Deputy District Judge Christopher McMurtie with a formal warning for misconductā€¦ The judge failed to meet the expectation to avoid conduct which might reduce respect for judicial office.ā€
